8. How long does it take to produce
a Sales CD?
Many factors influence the CD project duration. The two
that seem to consistently take time are content creation
and approvals. The actual process of creating the "Master"
CD for duplication happens rather quickly, frequently less
than a week including design, optimization, programming
and testing. We normally allow for 2 weeks for the "Press"
run because of seasonal scheduling issues and proofing.
As content complexity rises so too does the time required
to produce the finished master. In situations where the
majority of the content preexists, the project moves long
very quickly.
9. In a CD or DVD project, who does
what?
Kansas Multi-Media is fully capable of totally turnkey
CD projects, meaning we will take care of all tasks involved
through to completion. In fact, we'll even arrange for outsourced
fulfillment if you so desire. Normally, most companies have
at least some internal content and expertise capable of
contributing in a meaningful way towards the project. In
these cases we simply adapt and incorporate these resources
into the plan. In many cases, this can both expedite the
project and simultaneously keep production costs down.
10. How do we get started on a CD-ROM
project?
Without sounding trite, just give us a call and let's
talk it over. As a rule, we have some internal processes
and methods that have been honed over time to get everyone
through the project with minimal surprises and great communication.
We are very flexible within these guidelines. The most important
decisions that need to be understood really have to do with
objectives and audience. So a great place to start is to
really understand what the CD or DVD is supposed to accomplish
and for whom. The next most important obviously is budget
which we can help you with once we know the other stuff
and have a feel for existing available content.
11. What tools and technology do
you use for CD-ROMS?
People are sometimes amazed at how simple a CD can be.
That said, in most cases, using simple technologies such
as Microsoft PowerPoint for slide shows is just not adequate.
Some of the factors that guide us to the best technology
and tools for a CD-ROM project include:
» Is any custom animation required?
» Custom Audio or Video required?
» Sophisticated Navigation?
» Optimized for different platforms?
» Communication over the Internet?
» Write information to a file or database?
So, based on these and other requirements we'll select
the tools most appropriate to speed development and keep
costs down. Our favorite tools are Macromedia Director,
Dreamweaver, and Flash. We also use several Adobe products
such as Photoshop, Premier, and Illustrator. Not listed
are literally a hundred utilities and specialty programs
for 3D, Optimization, Testing, Scripting, Debugging and
Audio work such as synchronizing music to a presentation
or video.
